"One way to tackle ageism" was the title given to the Star Letter by ISL Associate, Peter Taylor, that featured in the CII Journal (September 1999).
"JD Edwards' apparent resignation to Ageism following redundancy (The Journal, July) prompts me to write. The reaction to being made redundant is usually "Why me" followed, understandably, by an initial loss of confidence.
Most employment agencies do little to bolster that confidence as they are only interested in CVs when they have a specific assignment to satisfy.
Most Jobs in later life are obtained through utilising the considerable network of contacts one has built up or by actively "networking". In short, you have to help yourself and not rely on the whim of an employment agency.
We live in an age of dramatic change and those prepared to adapt will survive. The harsh reality of "progress" has encroached on our cosy backwaters as technology takes over. However, there is still a need for "corporate memory" and perhaps Mr Edwards' skills and qualifications can be put to greater effect in another part of the industry.
Without knowing his particular circumstances, most people his age are now more "free" and unencumbered with family responsibilities.
At Insurance Solutions Limited we come across people in his situation, who welcome the opportunity to seek new challenges overseas where their skills may still be in short supply. The ages of our Associates range from 40 to 70 and they have adapted to work as independent consultants, expert witnesses, trainers and troubleshooters.
There are many emerging markets and young companies crying out for expertise, but not enough is done to meet their requirements (viz. Michael Lamb's letter, The Journal, May).
Mr Edwards, however, should take heart that so many others in his predicament have created new and fulfilling lives for themselves, as we see regularly at our monthly "Gatherings" to which Mr Edwards is most welcome to come."
If the above strikes a chord with you and you are willing to take up a challenge, then please contact us at ISL.
